How to Replace an Audi G28 Engine Speed Sensor

In this video Charles the Humble Mechanic demonstrates how to replace the G28 engine speed sensor. This sensor is located at the top of the transmission, above the flywheel ring gear. It sends a signal to the ECU via the grey wire (T55/49) and then to the tachometer in the instrument cluster.

1. Engine Speed Sensor

The grey wire is situated on the edge of transmission, directly above the flywheel ring. The sensor sends a signal via the grey wire to pin T55/49. The ECU then uses this information to control fuel, timig and boost. It also sends an indication to the G5 tachometer inside the instrument cluster.

The sensor is used as a reference to correlate with the G40 Camshaft Position Sensor. The ecu must be aware when the crankshaft is TDC and the location of the camshaft so it can start spark and injectors according to the situation.

If this sensor fails the ECU will display an error code P00160 which indicates that the Crank Shaft and Intake Camshaft aren't in sync and could indicate chain stretch or a jumped link on the upper chain of timing. The code won't appear without the additional information provided by other sensors (G4 or G40).

audi key fob can be a bit difficult as there are two different pins for the connector and they have different functions but the best method of testing it is to measure the resistance between the sensor and the ECU. It should read around 1000 ohms when the sensor is at full operation. If you're having issues with this component, look for evidence of coolant or oil in the connector bay.

2. Injectors





Yesterday, when i was accelerating to the fullest speed from highway paytoll, i experienced a big cut in power like the engine is running out of gas or the injectors are not firing anymore. In the morning, i removed the spark plugs, three were drenched in gazoline, the 4th one was dry. When I start the engine with no sparks i put tissue on the top of each hole in the injector and the 3 drenched with gazoline leap out, however the 4th one stays shut. I checked the ground connection of ECU pins 14,30, and 48/55. I got 0ohm. I'm assuming that the issue is elsewhere.

I also tried to reset the PID with no success. The car can start when the G28 is not plugged in and it runs perfectly when it is connected however it has the intermittent misfire issue at higher RPM. The coolant sensor (G62) even when it is unplugged, shows temperatures of -49c. I also noticed that the oil pressure gauge in the cockpit is showing 2 bar when the actual pressure is 0.0 when I crank up the engine.

I'm not sure what to do. I believe that I've all other possibilities out. I'm afraid i may have missed something. If anyone has any ideas please share them! TIA!

3. Fuel Pump

The fuel pump in the g28 can be activated by a signal from the RPM sensor. The GM-style transmitter is the same as the G4 and they both work in the 80, 100, 200, UrS and RS2 cars which is why you can easily locate one at a salvage yard or in a local parts store. Testing them is easy by putting your DMM in resistance mode and measure the resistance between pins 1 (with the bump on the connector's end up) and 2 (2nd from left on the black connector's side). They must be infinite Ohms.

4. ECU

The ECU of our 20vt turbo (3B AAN ABY ADU) engines needs to know the position and speed the crankshaft to determine fuel injector timing, etc. To accomplish this, it makes use of a Crank Position Sensor (G4) and an Engine Speed Sensor (G28). If either of these sensors go bad you will get codes on the diagnostic scanner which could cause engine shut down.

A damaged G28 sensor could cause an inaccurate speed counter for the gearbox, a gearbox that shifts faster than normal, or a misfire in the gear. If you are experiencing any of these problems, it is likely your sensor is going bad and requires replacement. They are cheap and easy-to-find, especially if they're a Bosch unit like ours. If you prefer, GM's version of this part is an option.

5. Tachometer

A failing engine speed sensor could be a cause for numerous issues in your vehicle. It's a crucial component of the transmission of your Audi since it sends information to the ECU on how fast or slow the engine is turning. This sensor could cause the transmission to fail and other components in the car to be affected.

The G5 engine sensor is located near the edge of transmission, above the flywheel ring. It transmits a signal via gray wire to ECU pin T55/49. The ECU then uses and processes this signal to regulate fuel, timig and boost as well as sends it on to the G5 tachometer inside the instrument cluster. You can determine if the sensor is in failure by examining the continuity from the sensor to the tachometer. Additionally, you can check continuity between pin T55/49 of the ECU and pin T6a/1 of the instrument cluster (trace [79trace [79]), and between pin T6a/1 and pin T26a/12. You should see a resistance of approximately 1000 ohms in these areas. This is a common feature across the Audi 80-100-200-RS2 series, starting from the 1985 MC all the way up to the 1997 UrS An and 1995 RS2 DU You may also find good ones in wrecking yards.
