SIM lock:

A sim-lock, NETWORK LOCK, carrier lock, imei lock or (Master) SUBSIDY lock serves as a technical limit built into CDMA and GSM phones by producers to be used by carrier networks to limit the usage of these phones to specific countries and/or networks. This is in comparison with a cell phone (retrospectively called SIM-free or unlocked) that doesn't enforce any SIM limitations.SIM locking is very common if subsidized handsets are sold with prepay contracts. What is important to note, however, that this technology tied in with the mobile phone has to be compatible with the system used by the network carrier. A GSM cellular phone is only going to work with a GSM carrier and won't function on a CDMA network. Moreover, a CDMA smartphone is only going to work with a CDMA service and won't function on a GSM service. Be aware that more sophisticated (2013 and newer) pricier mobiles are equipped to support both CDMA and GSM technologies, allowing for consumers to utilize their phones on pretty much any network.

Unlocking Technology:

A device can be unlocked simply by entering a code provided by the network operator. Alternative mechanisms include software working on the device or a pc attached to the phone, hardware devices that attach to the device or over-the-air by the service provider. Usually the unlock process is permanent. The code needed to do away with all locks from a smartphone is referred to as the master code, network code key, or multi-lock code. Generally if the phone is carrier locked it will generally show one of these messages: SIM network PIN blocked, Enter lock PIN.

Economics:

In many cases a SIM-locked device is marketed at a significantly reduced cost than an unlocked one due to the fact the supplier is expecting income thru its service. SIM locks are currently employed on inexpensive (pay-as-you-go) mobile phones, despite the fact that discounts on higher end handsets require a subscription that gives guaranteed income. Unlocked phones have a better market value.

Unlocking Services:

A number of businesses provide a network smartphone unlocking service . This service calls for all those whom want to unlock a phone to supply their IMEI number to a unlocking company and quite often they will also require the country and service provider the mobile is locked to, sometimes sent through email or submitted on their web site. The organization will then supply (in return for a fee) an unlock code for the mobile phone. For a lot of makes as in Nokia and Samsung several services also provide unique remote-unlocking software with instructions, where a cable connection is needed to remove the SIM lock from home. Such companies may email the unlocking code or software which will remotely unlock the device. The cost for unlocking a cellphone can fluctuate dependent upon the network it's locked to and the smartphone model itself, as every unlock code is unique to each unique device.

Unlocking Service Providers:

Disappointingly there are a massive number of dodgy service providers active in the smart phone IMEI unlocking industry. Consequently it is recommended to ensure you use a reputable supplier for such a service. Do your due diligence and investigate any potential providers before choosing to making an order. In the case of on line sellers, ensure they publish their public business name and corresponding registration information (all legit organization has to be legally registered with the official governing bodies for their country of origin) and ensure they provide a genuine registered address and contact details on their web site. In addition make sure that any payments made are done so via legitimate sources for instance a recognized bank or financial institution using a debt or credit card, but never ever make payment via a direct transfer since this provides no fiancial safeguards.
