Minecraft has been around for many years now, and it's popularity is growing however, since its official release on November 18th in 2011, increasing numbers of servers have exploded, died and then been forgotten. However, four servers have been part of Minecraft for the last 12 years it's been in existence, some rife with chaos and drama, while others are a serene paradise for those who want to be friends.

Position 1 - Novylen

Date of Creation 9 April 2010. Minecraft Servers

Created by Rbos

Address: minecraft.novylen.net

The Novylen Minecraft Server located in Canada is the official name of oldest Minecraft Server ever built, on the 9th day of April, 2010, 4 months prior to the previous owner, MinecraftOnline. However, if you read before you'll see that MinecraftOnline was released the same day multiplayer was launched, so how was Novylen established earlier than this?

While the server was first introduced on the day of Minecraft Multiplayer's release The map was made far earlier, as rbos, the owner, initially played the map on his singleplayer world all the way back in the Minecraft InfDev period (specifically InfDev 20100413), four months prior to the launch of Minecraft Multiplayer. The server has not been reset. This means that a user could have hopped onto the server over 10 years ago, built something, and then gone forever with their creation as the only reminder of their existence. Novylen is a lot less popular than 2b2t. This means that it hasn’t been subject to the same fate as many other griefs, exploits hackers, griefs, and so on. A lot of the original designs from 2010 are still visible in the present.

Position 2 - Nerd.nu

Date of Creation 10 June 2009 *

Address: nerd.nu

Nerd.nu was first established on June 10th in 2009, the day it was first launched just three days after Minecraft's unofficial release of 'Multiplayer, Version 'Classic 0.0.16a'. Survival mode was not yet available in Minecraft at this time. Nerd.nu has hosted many Minecraft creations, as you can see in the above image. The server has seen various game modes added over the years however, the oldest and most popular is the 'Creative' mode where players do not have a healthbar, are able to fly, and can build anything their imagination desires.

Although the server was established in the beginning stages of the game, some argue that MinecraftOnline is older than it is, because the map has been reset numerous times, meaning it's not the same world it was a few years ago. The Creative gamemode by Nerd.nu is currently at its 36th revision. It was reset 35 times prior to that.

Nerd.nu was not considered to be the oldest server due to the previously mentioned resets to the server. The world is young. Position 3 - Minecraft Online Date of Creation: August 4th 2010 Created by: SlowRiot

Address: MinecraftOnline.com

MinecraftOnline was launched on August 4, 2010, and has been in operation since. It was launched within an hour of Notch releasing survival mode. Amazingly, the server has remained online and has not been reset one time since. It doesn't look like the cobblestone conglomerate 2b2t has created.

It's amazing that MinecraftOnline has had a staff team since the beginning and, unlike 2b2t, MinecraftOnline has rules that players have to follow. However, this doesn't mean that everyone must adhere to the rules. In the 12 years that MinecraftOnline has been in existence, over 43,000 players were banned. That's not the only surprising thing about it though the global size (remember, it's never been reset) has risen to 26GB of storage space. That's just one world.

Position 4 - 2b2t (2builders2tools).

Date of Creation: 1st December 2010. *

2b2t is among the most popular Minecraft servers. Since it's founding on December 10, 2010, 2b2t has become known as an 'anarchy' server, with an extreme lack of rules, thousands of players roaming using hacked clients, a lack of friendliness and a distinct, beaten-up landscape. What the server is probably most well-known for, however, is it's map, which, since its inception has never been reset. This means that a lot of players have departed in the past, leaving their mark on the server.

In its early days, 2b2t had a steady stream of players, fluctuating between 10 and 80 players over the years. In June 2016, however, this changed when TheCampingRusher uploaded his very first video. The server is used by many other YouTubers, making 2b2t a highly popular website. In 2022, the server reaches over 1000 players in peak times and it doesn't appear like this number will diminish anytime soon.

These servers are not the only servers dating back to 2011, but many other servers do as well. Servers haven't all been around for that long.

Today, when Minecraft is gaining popularity, it's not just about history. Minecraft Server Lists have been around since their inception and showcase some of the top Minecraft servers available. A server list (or server databank) is an informational list that includes details about a server. It typically contains details like a server's name as well as its IP address and ports.
