I'm running Windows 10 Pro on a laptop with the lid shut 24/7, and the laptop's connected to an external monitor, USB mouse, and USB keyboard, all working like I want. After so many hours of inactivity, the laptop exits my apps (Chrome, Word, etc.) and powers down completely.
Both of those can cause problems with shutting down or Sleeping. If your current power plan is set to Balanced, several devices are allowed to go into a low power states which can sometimes cause issues. If you disable Sleep and have issues on Balanced, try changing to High performance. You will use a little more power but devices which might be causing an issue are typically told to just stay on.
