Minecraft to aid UN regeneration projects

Minecraft is being used to model 300 locations across the world, so that residents can decide on how they wish to change.

Block by Block is a collaboration between Minecraft-maker Mojang, UN Habitat and the Block by Block program.

They will also be able to alter the model and decide how the money for regeneration should be spent.

The Undugu playground, part of the Kibera region on the outskirts Nairobi, was one of the first places to be depicted in Minecraft for Block by Block's pilot program.

"We'll be putting it into the game so that players can stroll around and feel as if it's as real life as possible," Lydia Winters, Mojang's community liaison manager Mojang told the BBC.

Fyre UK, a Minecraft modeling company has recreated Undugu on the computer. Soon, those who live near the playground will be able to go to it to check out the plans of the United Nations to revive the area.

Virtual visits

Minecraft is set in a world built of cubes, each one of which is composed of the different virtual materials such as stone, dirt diamond, iron ore, and many more. The game requires you to stack the cubes, and then break them into their raw materials. This allows you to create artifacts and objects.

UN Habitat approached Mojang to assist with its urban regeneration plans because of the ease with which Minecraft can be modeled.

UN Habitat will remodel 300 areas in Minecraft by 2016. This will allow residents of the areas to participate in the process of transformation.

"It's connecting decision makers with the young people to decide on this common ground for public spaces around the globe," said Ms Winters.
